How to Become a Pilates Instructor in the UK
Most UK studios, gyms and insurers ask for a nationally recognised Level 3 Pilates qualification before you can teach. This is the four-step route most of our learners take, from enrolment to teaching their first class.
Step 1: Choose your route
Decide whether to start with Level 3 Mat Pilates on its own, or save by booking Mat and Reformer together in one of our Pilates packages. Then pick the study option that suits you best: online, blended or fast track.
Step 2: Qualify as a Level 3 Mat Pilates instructor
Learn anatomy and physiology, health and safety, Joseph Pilates’ original principles and how to plan and deliver safe, effective mat classes for individuals and groups. This is the foundation every Pilates instructor needs.
Step 3: Add your Level 3 Reformer Pilates qualification
Master the essential reformer repertoire, spring settings, equipment safety and class structure, so you can teach equipment-based Pilates in boutique studios and premium gyms.
Step 4: Get insured and start teaching
With a CIMSPA-endorsed qualification you can get fully insured and teach in studios, gyms, leisure centres and wellness clinics, or set up on your own with private, small-group or online classes. Then specialise to grow your income.
Take Your Pilates Expertise to the Next Level
Pilates is one of the most in-demand skills in the wellness industry, from boutique reformer studios to small rehab-focused groups. Here is what a recognised Level 3 Pilates qualification can open up for you.
Earning Potential
Qualified Pilates instructors in the UK typically earn £20 to £30 per hour in studio or group settings. With experience and private clients, this can rise to £35 to £45+ per hour, with many instructors earning £30,000 to £40,000 per year. Established freelance or online instructors offering specialist services can earn even more.
Where You Can Work
You can work in fitness studios, leisure centres, wellness clinics or independently as a freelance instructor. Many graduates also run private 1-to-1 or small-group sessions, teach corporate wellness programmes or offer online classes.
Career Opportunities
Our Pilates qualifications open doors to roles in boutique studios and premium gyms, as well as opportunities to start your own private practice. You might specialise in posture correction, rehab clients, small-group premium classes or wellness programming.
Flexible Schedule
Pilates classes run early mornings, lunchtimes, evenings and weekends, so it is easy to teach around another job or family life. Many instructors mix studio timetables with private clients and online classes to build the week they want.

From the Jane Fonda Days to the Saudi Royal Family
Kate Noble is our Lead Pilates Tutor and assessor. Here, in her own words, is how a Pilates qualification became her passport to a career that has taken her around the world.
It started in the Jane Fonda days
I’ve been teaching movement since the Jane Fonda days: headbands, leg warmers, the lot. But high-impact work takes its toll. The people who were still moving beautifully years later, still strong, supple and pain-free, were the ones who balanced it with something deeper: alignment, mobility and control. That’s Pilates. And the moment I truly understood it, I never looked back.
Training with the very best
I travelled the world to train under the very best Pilates and Reformer gurus. My qualification opened doors I never dreamed of. I taught across Australia and the UK, and even ran a Pilates studio in Saudi Arabia working with the Royal Family.
A skill that travels
Here is the truth about this skill: it travels. A good Pilates instructor can work in almost any city on earth, set their own hours and build the life they want around their work. Demand has never been greater. People have realised that lifting weights and running isn’t enough; they want the alignment and longevity that lets them enjoy their bodies for the rest of their lives. When you teach Pilates, you hand people their quality of life back.
Teaching the next generation
Today, I teach the next generation of instructors as a coach and assessor with Diverse Trainers. It is the most rewarding and portable career I could ever have chosen. My only regret is that nobody showed me this route sooner. That’s exactly why I teach it now.
“I turned Pilates into a passport. It can do the same for you.”

Launch Your Career in the Pilates Industry
Thinking about teaching Pilates? Here are answers to the questions we hear most from future instructors, from Mat versus Reformer to what a Pilates career pays.
Industry-Leading Pilates Instructor Training
The demand for qualified Pilates professionals in the UK is at an all-time high. From boutique Reformer studios in London to community Mat classes in Manchester, people are prioritising core strength, mobility and injury prevention more than ever. By completing a Pilates instructor course with a recognised provider, you position yourself at the forefront of this booming wellness sector.
What Does It Take to Become a Pilates Teacher?
Becoming a Pilates teacher is less about being flexible and more about understanding movement. You need to know the anatomy behind each exercise, how to adapt it for injuries and different abilities, and how to cue a class clearly. A CIMSPA-endorsed Level 3 qualification shows you can do all three, and it is what studio owners and insurers look for. Whether you want to teach a few classes a week or build a full-time wellness business, your Pilates teacher training starts here.
Online Pilates Courses vs Face-to-Face
Pilates is a hands-on skill, so how you practise matters as much as how you learn the theory. Our online Pilates courses suit self-motivated learners: you study anatomy and class programming on our e-learning platform, follow the exercise video library and submit teaching videos for assessment. If you would rather learn your cueing and corrections in person, blended learning adds a practical weekend in a studio with a tutor, where you practise teaching and complete your practical assessment.
What Is the Difference Between Mat and Reformer Pilates?
Mat Pilates uses body weight and small equipment to teach the classical repertoire, building core strength, control and mobility. Reformer Pilates uses a reformer bed with a sliding carriage and springs that can add resistance or support, so exercises can be made more challenging for strong clients or assisted for beginners and those returning from injury. Most instructors start with a Mat Pilates course, then add a Reformer Pilates qualification to teach in boutique studios.
How Much Do Pilates Instructors Earn in the UK?
Pilates instructors in the UK typically earn £20 to £30 per hour for studio and group classes, rising to £35 to £45+ per hour with experience and private clients. Many instructors earn £30,000 to £40,000 per year. Your income depends on where you teach, how many classes you run and the services you offer. Adding Reformer and specialist qualifications such as pre and post-natal or menopause exercise lets you charge more and reach a wider range of clients.
What Can I Do After My Pilates Qualification?
Qualifying as a Pilates instructor is just the beginning. Many of our graduates go on to specialise with qualifications such as Level 3 Reformer Pilates, Level 3 Pre & Post-Natal Exercise and Level 3 Women’s Health & the Menopause, while others broaden their skills with our personal trainer courses. Our Pilates Essentials and Pilates Ultimate packages bundle the most popular pathways together, or you can explore all of our course packages.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which Pilates course should I start with?
If you are new to the industry, start with our Level 3 Mat Pilates Diploma. It gives you the foundational knowledge of Joseph Pilates’ original principles, anatomy and class planning. Once qualified, you can progress to our Level 3 Reformer Pilates course. Want to book both together and save? Take a look at our Pilates Essentials and Pilates Ultimate packages.
What is the difference between Mat Pilates and Reformer Pilates?
Mat Pilates primarily uses body weight and small equipment to teach classical technique and build strength and mobility. Reformer Pilates uses a reformer bed with a sliding carriage and springs that can assist or resist movement. Because reformer exercises can be supported by the machine, classes can be adapted for clients with a wide range of fitness levels and abilities, including those in rehabilitation.
Do I need previous fitness qualifications to enrol?
No. Our Level 3 Mat Pilates course is an entry-level qualification, so you don’t need a gym instructor or personal training certificate to get started, just a passion for Pilates and a willingness to learn. You must be at least 16 years old. To enrol on our Level 3 Reformer Pilates course, you will need a Level 3 Mat Pilates qualification.
Can I complete a Pilates instructor course online?
Yes. All of the theory is delivered through our interactive e-learning platform, with 24/7 access to course materials, step-by-step exercise videos and unlimited tutor support. Practical skills are assessed by video and live online sessions, or you can choose blended learning and attend a practical weekend at one of our UK venues.
How long does it take to become a Pilates instructor?
Most students complete our Level 3 Mat Pilates or Level 3 Reformer Pilates course in 4 to 6 weeks, studying at their own pace, and our fast-track Mat Pilates course can be completed in as little as 1 week. The Pilates Essentials Package typically takes 8 to 12 weeks and the Pilates Ultimate Package 14 to 18 weeks. You have up to 2 years to finish.
Are your Pilates courses accredited?
Yes. Our Pilates qualifications are CIMSPA-endorsed and nationally recognised, so the certificate you earn is trusted by studio owners, gym managers and insurance providers across the UK.
Are your Pilates qualifications recognised abroad?
Yes. Because our courses meet high UK industry standards and are CIMSPA-endorsed, they map to international frameworks, allowing many of our graduates to teach globally, from Australia to the Middle East.
Can I get insured once I qualify?
Yes. Our CIMSPA-endorsed Level 3 qualifications allow you to get fully insured as a Pilates instructor, so you can start teaching in studios and gyms, or set up your own classes, as soon as you qualify.
How much does a Pilates instructor course cost?
Our Level 3 Mat Pilates and Level 3 Reformer Pilates courses each start from £899 for online distance learning, with blended learning from £1,099 and fast-track Mat Pilates from £1,299. The Pilates Essentials Package starts from £1,399 and the Pilates Ultimate Package from £1,999, saving you up to £797 compared with booking each course separately.
Can I get finance for my Pilates course?
Absolutely. We offer flexible finance options across all our courses and packages, meaning you can start your training today for as little as £20.81 per month. Visit our payment options page or speak to our team to find the best option for you.
Do you offer Pilates instructor courses near me?
Yes. As well as our online Pilates courses, we deliver practical Pilates instructor training at UK venues including London, Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool and Glasgow. Contact our team for your nearest location and upcoming course dates.
What are the six principles of Pilates?
Joseph Pilates’ method is built on six core principles: concentration, control, centring, flow, precision and breathing. Our Level 3 Pilates courses are rooted in these original principles, so you understand not just what to teach, but why each exercise works.
What support will I get during my course?
Every student receives unlimited tutor support by phone, email and chat, 24/7 access to our e-learning platform with step-by-step exercise videos, and help from our friendly student support team from enrolment right through to qualification.
