How to Become a personal trainer?


Becoming a personal trainer is simple, all you need is to complete our Level 3 Diploma in Gym Instructing and Personal Training, this includes 2 qualifications, Level 2 in Gym Instructing, and Level 3 in Personal Training. Once certified you will have a CIMSPA accredited qualification and be able to gain employment or develop your own business as a self-employed personal trainer anywhere in the UK and internationally.


5 Steps to Becoming a Successful Personal Trainer


Step 1: Sign up for a course


At Diverse Trainers, we offer a fast-track Advanced Diploma in Gym Instructing and Personal Training. This course will equip you with all the theoretical and practical knowledge to be a successful Personal Trainer in the fitness Industry.


Step 2: Gain some experience


One of the requirements to pass your qualificationn is to complete 20 hours of industry experience. Go to your local gym, speak to current personal trainers, ask the gym if you can shadow a session, or even work a few hours in the gym environment. This will be valuable to you in the future as potential clients will be available for you to interact with.


Step 3: Receive training and support from experienced fitness professionals

Level 2 Gym Instructor

Level 3 Personal Trainer


Lesson 1: Measuring energy expenditure and macros

Step 4: Complete the course and start your business


Once you have received your certificates there are several things you need to consider:

  1. Ensure you are insured as a personal trainer to train clients, there are several insurance companies that can provide adequate cover in cases where you or your client become injured.
  2. Some gyms require a first aid at work qualification before you can start your employment.
  3. Create a personal training business name.
  4. Set up social media business pages and start to create content to increase your following
  5. Choose a location where you want to train clients, this could be at your local gym, renting a studio, or even in your garden/garage at home.
  6. Decided on prices you want to charge clients per session and any packages you want to offer. You could also consider charging a set fee each month that includes so many sessions.
  7. Learn how to generate leads and market yourself.
  8. Professional appearance, you are a walking advertisement for your personal training business.

Step 5: Build your client base


Whether you are working in a gym or working as an outdoor or home trainer, you will need to build a solid client base. Consultations, taster sessions, and group training are all great ways to generate leads and start that process. Build your reputation and always keep learning, studying, and researching. You can add CPD courses to help with your own professional development and learn new skills that will enhance your skills and work well with personal training such as the Level 3 Diploma in Sports Massage. How long does it take to become a personal trainer?


You can complete this qualification in a little as 8-12 weeks, working 2-3 hours per day 4 times a week but you do have 2 years to complete the qualification. The level 2 Gym Instructing has 6 units and the Level 3 Personal Trainer has 5 units. They are assessed by completing multiple-choice open book exam questions, coursework portfolio questions, and practical video assessments. In addition to this, you are required to complete 20 hours of industry experience, this involves you working alongside a personal trainer for 20 hours. Can I make good money as a personal trainer?


Certainly! Personal Trainers can earn £50,000+ per year. Your income can vary depending on your location, knowledge, and experience. Personal Trainers new to the industry can expect to charge £20-£40 per hour,  as your clientele and experience develop you will be able to start increasing your prices. We would always advise continuing your professional development with further qualifications such as our level 4 Strength &  Conditioning course to enhance your knowledge.
